Periodontics
Periodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with periodontal diseases affecting the tissues and structures that surround teeth. Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial disease that attacks the soft tissues and bone that surround and support your teeth. If left untreated periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss.
If your mouth exhibits swollen, red and bleeding gums, if you have an unpleasant taste in your mouth or any loose teeth, you should see a periodontist and a periodontal dental hygienist immediately. Good oral health care and regular visits with your dentist to have you teeth cleaned and the plaque removed by professional means can stop the inflammation of the gums and the spread of periodontal disease.
The treatment of periodontal disease depends on how far it has progressed. Your periodontist and the periodontal dental hygienist will determine the best treatment option in your particular situation.
