Non-Metal Fillings
Mercury or amalgam fillings are now a thing of the past thanks to recent advances in modern dental technologies of adhesion, resins, lasers, and state of the art ceramics. Non-metal, composite resin fillings were created as an alternative to traditional metal fillings.
Made of tooth-colored composite resins, non-metal fillings are safer, stronger, more aesthetically appealing and enduring. These fillings actually strengthen your tooth beyond the level it had with the silver amalgam fillings. Amalgams expand with heat and contract with cold, which weakens the tooth wall, leading to fractures and allowing bacteria to enter and cause decay. Amalgam fillings also contain mercury that may have negative long-term health effects. Composite fillings also lack the sensitivity that is often associated with silver amalgam fillings.
Non-metal fillings can be used in both front and back teeth and are made on-site and completed in one office visit. In the majority of cases, metal fillings or crowns can be replaced with techniques that are more conservative. Composite fillings bond to the tooth for a tight seal, therefore making it possible to preserve the healthy remaining tooth structure. Composite resin is strong and stain-resistant; in addition it is color-matched to the natural tooth, making the fillings invisible.
