IntraOral Camera
Tremendous technological advances have made most dental procedures easier and less time consuming for both dentists and patients. The dental intraoral camera is just one of these advances. The intraoral camera makes oral problems such as cavities and gum disease highly visible, which allows patients to see what dentists are seeing. By viewing the areas to be treated, the patients are able to be informed and involved in their oral health matters.
The intraoral camera is a tiny device designed to be inserted into your mouth and it is approximately the size of the dental handpiece or dental mirror. It has a light built into it which illuminates the area to be examined. This camera can accurately snap detailed photographs or take a video of the area. The intraoral camera is outfitted with a disposable cover for each new patient to prevent contamination, and as it’s moved from tooth to tooth, images are displayed on a television monitor that is mounted above the dental chair or seated right next to it. Most cameras have the ability to zoom in on your teeth up to 20 times, thereby greatly enhancing the ability to see areas of special interest in your mouth.
The intraoral camera is especially essential in daily practice during dental restoration procedures. For example, if you want to have an amalgam filling replaced with a composite resin filling, your dentist will use the intraoral camera to take "before and after" pictures and display the results simultaneously for you to see. Plus, instead of merely explaining to you why a certain dental procedure is needed, your dentist can actually show you.
Intraoral technology is a great way to uncover your dental problems early on, before they become serious. The images taken by an intraoral camera can also save you a significant amount of money in the long run for procedures like cosmetic dentistry.
Being able to see the problem with an intraoral camera allows you to make a more informed decision on how you would like to proceed with your dental treatment.
