Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are clear plastic coatings that are applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth to prevent tooth decay by creating a physical barrier against plaque and acid.
Dental sealants are typically used for children since the likelihood of developing tooth decay on the chewing surfaces begins early in life. Applying dental sealants to tooth surfaces shortly after the teeth erupt is the best way to protect molars where pits and fissures are more prevalent and are susceptible to bacteria.
Adults can benefit from sealants too. Sealants protect vulnerable areas, such as pits and fissures, by sealing out plaque and food. Sealant placement for adults would be most advantageous for those who are cavity prone or have made a significant change in their diet or oral health care.
Dental sealants are easy to apply and it takes only a few minutes to seal each tooth. Sealants can last for many years, but they should be checked regularly and assessed for possible re-application.
